2015

JANUARY

Those present: Phil (Grum) Grummet, Mike (Normal) Norman, Bob Adams, Ian Coats, Paul Kolarovich, Leo Davis, Peter Colling, Wilf Prest, John (JB) Bannon, Mike Johnston, John (Pottsie) Potter, Wayne Anthoney.

But twelve in all, but all delighted to be reinstated to the upstairs room at Jolley's, with a reasonably solid assurance that we will not be booted downstairs again unless there is a jolly good reason.

e

There was an enormous black mushroom on the antipasto table this month. Some said it was delicious.

The delight at being upstairs again is clearly evident

Clockwise from left: Wilf, Paul, JB, Pottsie, Bob, Peter, Mike, Grum, Normal, Ian, Wayne. Leo behind the camera.

The chicken tagine was superb

FEBRUARY

THOSE PRESENT: Bill Kay, Wayne Anthoney, Ghil'ad Zuckermann, Phil (Grum) Grummet, Paul Kolarovich, Arwed Turon, Leo Davis, Neville Schloss, Peter Colling, Mike (Normal) Norman, Ian Henschke, John (Pottsie) Potter, Don Riddell, Wilf Prest, John (JB) Bannon. Sixteen Gents in all.

Arwed caused a minor sensation on his arrival by presenting a large scrapbook, found by a friend in the Adelaide University Dramatic Society's room in the Union Hall shortly before its destruction. It contained programs from most of the shows presented in Union Hall from 1964 to 1976. Many of the Gentlemen present (Bill, Wayne, Grum,Paul, Arwed, Pottsie, JB)  were involved in many of the shows listed and naturally the interest was great. Once has been around the traps for a while, and needing to be treated with great care, it will be given to the Special Collection of the Barr Smith Library.

It was good to see Ghil'ad back at lunch after a three month absence. He reported that he had survived an earthquake in China and being robbed somewhere else.

Superb beef for main course

Pegge often looks like this

We took a moment to raise a glass to Tony Colebatch, great friend of Paul Lloyd and regular luncheon attendee in the nineties, who passed away recently

Wayne demonstrates an astounding trick that he found on the Internet -  the World's Fasted Shoelace Tie method -  to considerable interest, proving that (a) you can teach an old dog new tricks and (b) the Internet is useful for something after all

MARCH

Those present: Ghil'ad Zuckermann, Phil (Grum) Grummet, Wayne Anthoney, Marl Coleman, Bill Kay, Sa (Bumpy) Harris, Mike (Normal) Norman, Peter Colling, Geoff Shepherd, Leo Davis, John (McGoon) McGowan, John (Pottsie) Potter, Andy (Lidgo) Ligertwood, Mike (Cobbs) Jacobs, Keith Conlon, Andy (Bish) Bishop, Tony (Brooks) Brooks, Bob Lott, Ian Henshke. 19 in all, possibly a non-Christmas Hogarth record.

And it was a delight to see Bumpy back in the fold.

The wonderful book of Union Hall memorabilia that Arwed brought last month was brought again for the benefit of several Gents

who had not seen it and proved again to be of great interest.

Antipasto - magnificent as always

Grum, Bob L, Cobbs

Great gathering

Yes...it's BUMPY!

The chicken tajine was terrific too

Mike, Wayne, Chloe spot something nasty on Grum's head

Pottsie shows us how to use a pepper grinder. Like as if we didn't know.

Normal had brought in something from the internet about inane phone conversations to 'help lines'

and Potter was delighted to join in a duet reading that was well received.

Arwed levitates a bread roll.

MAY

Monthly Hogarth Club Luncheon; Upstairs at Jolley’s Boathouse, River Torrens Bank.

Diners: John Bannon, Ian Bidmeade, Andrew Bishop, Tony Brooks, Keith Conlon, Leo Davis, Phil Grummet, Ian Henschke, Michael Jacobs, Bill Kay, Paul Kolarovich, John McGowan, Mike Norman, Tony Parkinson, Ed Pegge, John Potter
, Peter Tregilgas, Arwed Turon, Neville Sloss, Michael Wex, Milton Wordley, Prof Ghil’ad Zuckermann.

Apologies: Wayne Anthoney, Bob Adams, Ian Coates, Mark Coleman, Malcolm Elliott, Ian Hamilton, Samela Harris, Robert “Red” Hodge, Michael Johnston, Andy Ligertwood, Bob Lott, Don Riddell, Prof Wilfrid Prest.

With 22 at table this was our largest gathering ever, apart from the 25 who have attended each of our two Holden Street Xmas romps. Ghil'ad Zuckermann's guest, Michael Wex, visiting Adelaide to give lectures on Language, gave a very entertaining talk about teenage boys, in a Canadian Jewish School, grappling with finding appropriate language, often purloined from the religious language they were dealing with day to day, for practices they dreamed of, some of which they were not even sure existed. Our fun may have gone on longer (there were cries of 'More, more') had Leo not set a five minute time limit.

Brooks informed us of the death of Doug Craig and some said some kind and carefully chosen words about him.

Conlon read us a bonza piece about a death on a long-drop toilet. Normal had brought it along. Someone suggested that the anonymous gem had the feel of our Auburn scribe, C. J. Dennis, about it and that it might  have been his work.

These were the days we hanker for, when we got real value for money with a wondrous smorgasbord spread to feast from.

Ian Henscke, Phil ‘Grum’ Grummet (in his 80s), Wayne Anthoney, Mike Norman, Keith Conlon, Mike Johnston (hidden). Peter Tregilgas, Ghil’ad Zuckermann, Bob Adams, Ian Coates, Wilf Prest.

Bob Adams, Arwed Turon, Keith Conlon, Andy Ligertwood, Ian Henscke.

Ian Henscke spoke of the interview program he conducts on local ABC (891) and told of Peter Garrett being sued by the gaming lobby. Ian is interviewing Garret tomorrow and he held up the book he is reading in preparation. His preparation for interviews allows him to be expert in a wide range of topics.

Peter Tregilgas, Wilf Prest, Ghil’ad Zuckermann.

Wilf Prest read the rules from a Library in the US (Washington?) to which he had travelled doing his research on William Blackstone. He was searching for particular records and was told the only other ones were in London. What about Australia? A search was done. ‘Sorry sir. They are only available in the Barr-Smith Library in Adelaide’.

Wayne Anthoney, Bill Kay, Arwed Turon, Keith Conlon, Andy Ligertwood.

Peter Tregilgas, Ghil’ad Zuckermann.

Peter Tregilgas lives in NSW, on the coast north of Sydney, somewhere like Macquarie Harbour. His wife is an executive in the Anglican Church. He turns 61 next Monday and tries to be in Adelaide around the time of his birthday each year.

Ghil’ad Zuckermann, Bob Adams,

Ghil’ad was asked why regional accents do not appear strongly in singing. As an aside in the explanation it was learned that the four to nine tones (depending on whether it was Mandarin or Cantonese) cannot be sung.

Ghil’ad is working on reconstruction of the Barngarla language from Eyre Peninsula. He is dismissive of Paster Schurmann’s linguistic skills but uses his list of words and applies his own knowledge of related extant indigenous languages in his reconstruction work.
Ghil’ad showed us a great video of a Chinese woman NOT startled when a man in a mask suddenly appeared but reeling away when he took off the mask and revealed that he was black.

A fisher on the other side of the Torrens from Jolley’s caught a large carp and left it on the bank to die. Ghil’ad spotted what was going to happen and began filming with his mobile. Watched by a curious pelican, the carp wriggled, writhed and leapt and finally plomped into the river. The video was shown and numbers of chaps, using different words, urged him to ‘monitorise’ his clip. ‘It would sell for thousands’

A Bob Ellis item was read from The Saturday Paper.
